All of the training, planning, packing, fretting, and water drinking for our Rim to Rim "To Hell and Back" Hike is now down to hours. Huge thanks to Sarah Rudoy for designing our awesome trophy shirts (see pix)---to be worn only after we emerge from the Grand Canyon.
Pete and I are so glad to be traveling with Ken, Diana and Sarah. They are great fun to be with, and their enthusiasm for this adventure is a big motivator.
We've spent the last two days going over and over what to bring and what to leave behind, and who is bringing what medication to cover any mishaps. We did discuss what we are worried about. Me--braving the heights. Diana---keeping her electrolytes balanced. Sarah---the lack of ketchup for her meals (rectified by a trip to Target today). Oh, and she didn't know there'd be no campfire in the Canyon---so she, Pete and Ken shot video of our hotel's firepit, which we hope will chase the darkness away. Ken---he hopes our guide has good politics. Pete--not enough salty snacks (rectified by a purchase of salted almonds and a box of Cheezits to be portioned out).
And so we begin. I honor my father with this hike on his birthday, and also my friend Alyssa's father, Philip Ettinger, who also was born on this day. A man who exhibited courage during his life that defies description. I hike for me, and all the fantastic friends and family who have supported Pete and me. And as if we didn't have enough good omens and wishes to send us off, today while having lunch at Five Guys, we five guys noticed our order #: 57. A year of living fully, one step at a time. We'll be off the grid 'til Saturday. See you then!
